HARLOW Labour Party have elected their Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the next general election. The hustings and selection took place yesterday, 15th April in Mark Hall school, with the four candidates answering questions on issues such as climate change, Brexit and engaging young members. After the voting was completed, it was announced Laura McAlpine is to be Harlow Labour Party’s next parliamentary candidate. Laura will be fronting a long campaign into the next general election, when she is expected to be challenging the incumbent Conservative MP for Harlow, Robert Halfon.

Laura’s Grandmother Jean McAlpine was a long serving Labour District Councillor, so she is continuing a family tradition of strong socialist values and support for the Labour Party.

As an active member of the Labour Party in Harlow, she is currently the District Council candidate for the Staple Tye ward, the CLP’s Youth Officer, and a member of the Labour Party Executive Committee. She enjoys broad support within the Harlow Labour Party, local unions and members of Harlow Young Labour.

Having grown up in Harlow, Laura is passionate about the town, and will strive to translate Labour’s manifesto policies into improvements to important local issues such as housing, the NHS and education.

Shortly after her victory, Laura said; “I am absolutely delighted to be given the opportunity to seek to represent my town as an MP. I am looking forward to working with the huge pool of talent amongst local party members and councillors, to run a bold campaign against austerity and Tory cuts.

“I grew up in Harlow and understand the difficulties and struggles the people of Harlow face every day under this Tory Government. I am determined to hold the Tories to account, and to fight for the interests of the people of Harlow and the villages in Westminster. Harlow is my home, and between now and the next General Election, whenever it may be, I will continue to do everything in my power to make Harlow a better place for all of us.”
